After my boyfriend's car accident, I stayed by his side, sleepless, for two days and nights.
The moment Daniel Reynolds woke up, I suddenly recalled a funny video I'd watched recently.
I held his hand, wiped away a tear with dramatic flair, and said, "Daniel, you finally woke up. Do you have any idea you've been in a coma for two years?"
Under the influence of the medication, Daniel was slow to react.
He asked me incredulously, "How's that possible?"
I stifled a laugh, took out my phone with the date adjusted, and showed him "June 16, 2026":
"I'm not lying. It's been two years since your accident."
"Don't I look much more haggard now?"
I hadn't slept for twenty hours taking care of Daniel. I was utterly exhausted, dark circles under my eyes, probably looking like I aged two years.
Daniel seemed to believe it.
His eyes reddened as he looked at me and said hoarsely, "Amelia, thank you for not abandoning me."
"These two years must have been tough for you."
"It's my fault... burdening you..."
I had just meant to tease Daniel.
But hearing those words, I immediately regretted it.
I was about to tell him it was a joke when a nurse called for me from outside.
"Family of Daniel Reynolds, come and handle the paperwork."
I tucked him in, gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek, and said, "You rest here. I'll be right back."
Half a minute later, I finished the paperwork.
As I was about to open the door, I overheard Daniel talking to himself inside.
"Amelia really loves me."
"How could she love me so much?"
His voice was rare, hoarse, and tender.
My face felt warm, and my heart raced.
I stood silently by the door, eager to hear more of what Daniel might say.
Before the accident, he had gone with a friend to look at engagement rings. Maybe this incident would prompt him to propose to me.
But then Daniel said, "Two years... I wonder how Riley's doing now?"
My smile froze instantly.
A rush of blood to my head made my ears ring.
Riley is not me.
She's Daniel's ex-girlfriend.
They broke up seven years ago.
I thought Daniel had moved on from his first love, which was why he chose to be with me.
But I never imagined, couldn't have imagined, that Daniel, thinking he'd been unconscious for two years, would first wonder about his ex-girlfriend's well-being.
My hand on the doorframe trembled slightly.
I wanted to storm into the room, confront Daniel: Why are you still hung up on her?
If you can't forget her, then what do my four years with you mean?
But a voice behind me snapped me back to reality.
It was some of Daniel's friends coming to visit him, greeting me, "Amelia, we heard Daniel woke up, so we came to see him."
Trailing behind was Natalie Reynolds, Daniel's half-sister.
The young girl never liked me.
She stopped in front of me, a smirk playing on her lips, and said, "Amelia, I heard my brother got into the accident while getting you a late-night snack?"
"If you ask me, we should eat less at night, keep that figure in check."
